St George Chinese Community Memorial Committee Bursaries
Bursary Objectives
The SCCMC Memorial bursary focused on local Chinese history research can cultivate cohesion and advance multiculturalism by empowering young people from diverse backgrounds to engage in a shared exploration and celebration of the local Chinese culture and history. By offering financial support and recognition for research projects on local history, this competition encourages young people to work together, learn from each other, and build bridges of understanding and respect. This, in turn, brings people from different backgrounds together to appreciate and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of their community.
Application Entries
Application opens on Monday 27 July 2026 and closes at 12pm on Friday 2 October 2026.
Theme
“Chinese Footprints in St George and Balonne: Stories of Heritage, Work and Belonging.”
Students are invited to explore the story of a person, family, group, place or event connected with Chinese heritage in St George or the wider Balonne Shire. Entries may examine the experiences and contributions of the Amoy shepherds, Chinese workers, settlers, families, business owners or community members to the region’s social, cultural and economic development.
Categories
The submission entries in any one of these mediums is acceptable:
- Writing a short story with no more than 400-600 words, or
- Provide a collage of photos of your story on a single side, A3 sized paper.
For this application for bursaries, one entry is allowed per person.
Bursary Awards
One SCCMC Memorial Bursary awarded to each of 2 categories each school is $500.
Judging criteria
- Creativity and originality:
- Novelty and uniqueness of the idea or approach
- Creativity and originality in execution and presentation
- Demonstration of research and review of historical information
- Diversity and inclusion:
- Consideration of diversity and inclusion in the subject matter or theme
- Promotion of tolerance and understanding of different cultures, beliefs, and perspectives
- Demonstration of a commitment to creating a more inclusive society
- Composition and storytelling:
- Effective use of composition, including elements such as framing, lighting, and colour
- Clear and engaging storytelling through visual or written narrative
- Demonstration of a strong sense of narrative or theme throughout the work
Terms and condition of the Application for SCCMC Bursary
- Eligibility: The Bursary is open to all current students of Country Universities Centre (CUC) Balonne Hub.
- Application process: The application process for the bursary award must be completed by the stated deadline and may require the submission of additional documentation.
- Selection process: The selection process for the bursary award will be based on specific criteria outlined by the Bursary organisers. The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
- Award amount: The bursary award amount will be determined by the Bursary organisers and may have certain conditions or restrictions.

- Publicity: The Bursary organisers reserve the right to publicise the Recipients of the SCCMC Memorial Bursary and their accomplishments in connection with the bursary awards.

- Changes to the terms and conditions: The Bursary organisers reserve the right to make changes to the terms and conditions of the Bursary Application at any time.
